Active Semester Program

VITAS Healthcare Partnership.

Through VOP's partnership with VITAS Healthcare, students have the opportunity to support veterans and other patients receiving hospice care through meaningful companionship, recognition activities, patient support, and service.

1
Veteran Recognition & Group Activities: Participate in organized veteran recognition and service activities, including pinning ceremonies, holiday cards and care packages, and VITAS events.
2
Direct Patient Companionship: Eligible volunteers can work directly with patients as part of the care team, providing ongoing companionship and support based on their role and availability. Direct patient volunteering requires VITAS onboarding, screening, fingerprinting, and TB testing.
3
Flexible Ways to Serve: Opportunities may also include patient check-in calls, supportive calls to bereaved family members, and administrative assistance in the VITAS office.

—— COMMUNITY SERVICE & HEALTHCARE

Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

Located beside the University of Florida campus, the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center gives VOP members the opportunity to serve veterans directly while gaining experience across several areas of the hospital. Through VOP's relationship with the VA, our volunteers receive priority access to volunteer opportunities that can otherwise be limited or difficult to obtain independently.

Customer Service Unit

Supporting veterans throughout the hospital through patient transportation, conversation and companionship, thank-you cards, and other patient-focused activities.

Pulmonary Unit

Volunteers gain exposure to pulmonary medicine and, under appropriate physician and staff supervision, may assist with or observe experiences involving bronchoscopy and robotic procedures, sleep apnea, sleep testing, and other pulmonary services.

Prosthetics Unit

Supporting the VA's prosthetics services and gaining exposure to the work involved in helping veterans who rely on prosthetic and assistive devices.

VA Events & Community Support

VOP members also assist when invited to special activities and events, including ice cream socials, activities supporting Fisher House, veteran-focused festivities, and other opportunities throughout the year.

Future VOP Chapters

As VOP continues to grow at the University of Florida, we hope to develop a framework that allows students at other universities to establish Veteran Outreach Program chapters in their own communities. Future chapters would carry VOP's mission forward by connecting college students with local veterans through service, outreach, and community partnerships while adapting their programs to the needs of veterans in their area.
